Why desert gutters clog with dust instead of leaves
In a wet climate, rain flushes the trough every week. Here it does not. Phoenix gets its rain in two bursts: the monsoon, which the National Weather Service defines as June 15 through September 30, and a few winter fronts. The rest of the year the gutter is a dry shelf. Dust settles in it from every breeze and every haboob. Foam and shingle roofs shed granules onto it. Palo verde bloom lands in spring, then pods, and the sun bakes all of it into a crust. When the first monsoon cell hits, that crust becomes a dam at the outlet, water climbs the trough, and the run overflows at the corners. Standing water that stays behind after the storm adds weight that pulls at the hangers and holds moisture against the fascia. The dust is the problem, and it is invisible from the ground.
What a service visit covers
A cleaning visit covers the whole system, not only the trough. Each visit includes:
- Scooping and flushing every run with a hose until water leaves the outlets clean
- Clearing every downspout from the top elbow to grade, including buried extensions that silt up
- Checking pitch and looking for standing water after the flush
- Checking every hanger, and tightening or replacing any that have backed out
- Looking at corner, end cap, and outlet sealant for cracks and noting anything that needs resealing
- Confirming extensions and splash blocks still carry water away from the slab
- Rinsing guard panels and clearing anything sitting on top of the mesh
- Photos of what we found and what we cleared, so you know what your roof is producing
When to schedule: before monsoon, after monsoon
Two visits a year cover most homes. The first is in late May or early June, before the June 15 start of monsoon season, so the trough and downspouts are clear when the first cell arrives. The second is in October, after the season ends, to remove the storm debris and mud and to inspect for anything the wind and water loosened. Homes under mature mesquite, palo verde, pine, or palms benefit from a third visit after spring bloom, and homes with foam roofs shed enough grit to justify the same. If you only book one, book the pre-monsoon visit.

How often should gutters be cleaned in Arizona?

What happens if you do not clean your gutters before monsoon season?
The dry sediment bed in the trough turns to mud in the first storm and blocks the outlet. Water backs up, overflows at the corners, and lands at the foundation, which is exactly what the gutter was installed to prevent. The standing water left behind pulls at hangers and keeps the fascia wet for weeks.
What does a gutter cleaning service include?

Can I clean my own gutters?
On a single-story home with a stable ladder, yes. Scoop the trough, flush it with a hose, and watch each downspout until it runs clear. Two-story tile roofs are a different matter. The eave is high, the tile is slick, and a slipped tile exposes underlayment to the sun. We handle those.
